Nabacwa Mary Ssonko

Mary Ssonko Nabacwa was a supporting researcher in Uganda. She is currently undertaking her PhD studies at the Centre for Development Studies University of Wales Swansea. She holds a Masters of Arts in Women's Studies from Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda, East Africa. Prior to her PhD studies, Mary worked as the Gender Advisor at ActionAid Uganda from November 1997-September 2003. She provided technical support, guidance and co-ordination in the development of the gender and women's rights interventions and their integration in the development work of ActionAid Uganda and some of its partners. Mary has worked closely with women's organisations and other gender focused NGOs in Uganda. Prior to joining ActionAid, Mary was working with World Vision International in Rakai district, Uganda where she gained a lot of experience in working with poor community men, women, boys and girls especially those who are affected by HIV/AIDS. Mary has campaigned for the need to link development policy, theory and practice and she contributed to the initiation of the development practice theme in the Women's Worlds Interdisciplinary Congress 2002 that was held at Makerere University, Kampala Uganda

Mary has participated in a number of other research projects and written a number of papers. Mary's most recent paper is entitled " Policies and Practices towards women's empowerment: Policy Advocacy by Gender Focussed NGOs and the realities of Grassroots Women in Uganda."
